Description
EARLY 20TH CENTURY 2-ROW KEYBOARD MELODEON IN C (and F)The larger set of keys on the left is in C major. It is similar to a harmonica in that when you compress the bellows you will hear notes that work with a C major chord. When you expand the bellows it will sound notes in the G7 chord. The 2nd set of smaller keys do the same thing except in the key of F major. The right hand valves produce chords.
I don’t play melodeon nor am I an expert or a restorer, but I have seen several others like this and did open it up for inspection.
I found this when looking it over:
There is no identification on the instrument anywhere.
There is a valve on the bass side that isn’t supposed to make any sound but is used to relieve pressure. The spring for that valve is broken.
All the keyboard keys work and the wooden paddles are all secure. Some of them are not original.
There are 4 stop buttons. 2 of them are decorative and the 2 on the treble side are functional and work. 2 reeds are broken and at least 1 is way out of tune.
The hand and thumb straps are tattered and not functional
The reed banks are sealed with hot melt but this is reversable if a restorer prefers the traditional wax.
I noticed at least 1 air leak in the bellows at a corner joint
One of the lock downs that keep the bellows closed for storage is broken off but I have the piece. The overall dimensions are roughly 18 inches by 13 by 8 (bellows compressed).
